Me
Name: Michael Nystrom Location: Cairo, Egypt Year: 1999
I suppose I chose this picture because it was the beginning of the end for me - the end of innocence and ignorance. I had been working as a stock broker for the past three years - you know the life - sitting in a little cubicle under flourescent lights, working to live and living to work. It was the middle of the great, late 20th Century Bull Market, but I could smell a rat way back then. It was clear that something was wrong, though I didn't know what. But I had distinct feeling that it was all an age of illusion.
For a variety of reasons, and based on a number of coincidences, I decided to chuck it all and take a trip around the world. Looking back, I don't know if I decided it, or if it decided me. At any rate, that is what happened. I got a big backpack and a one way ticket around the globe. I wanted to see - with my own eyes - all the places I'd only read about in books. At the age of 29, for the first time in my life, I was free. No schedule to keep, no one to answer to, just the luxury of time, and following the thread of life where it took me.
Let me tell you something. Once you get a taste of true freedom, nothing else compares. Most Americans think they're "free," because that's what we've been told our entire lives. It isn't true. The short answer is that most of us are on an endless treadmill, chasing things that will never make us happy, prisoners who hold the key but are afraid ever to use it.
The long answer takes a lifetime (or more) to figure out.
